Colour-Coded Cloths: The System Behind Safe Cleaning

If you have ever noticed a cleaner carrying cloths in more than one colour, that is not decoration. It is one of the simplest and most effective controls in professional cleaning, and it is the reason a properly run contract keeps a washroom clean without ever putting the kitchen at risk.

Why colour matters

The idea is straightforward: different areas of a building carry different levels of risk, and a cloth that has touched a toilet seat should never touch a worktop. Rather than trust every operative to remember which cloth went where, the industry uses colour as a visual rule that removes the guesswork — and makes it obvious to anyone watching whether the standard is being followed.

One cloth used in the wrong place is the single most common way cross-contamination happens on a routine clean.

BICSc-endorsed colour coding standard

The four-colour system

The system endorsed by the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) splits a site into four zones, each with its own cloth colour:

Red — Washrooms and sanitary areas

Toilets, urinals and washroom floors — kept fully separate to stop bacteria transferring elsewhere.

Blue — General areas

Offices, desks, reception, glass and general dusting — the everyday cloth for shared spaces.

Green — Kitchens & food areas

Worktops, sinks and food-contact surfaces — never crossed with washroom or general-area cloths.

Yellow — High-risk & isolation areas

Clinical waste points, isolation rooms and other higher-risk zones needing extra separation.

How we apply it on every contract

Every Marcaspus operative is trained on this system before they attend a site, and it is checked as part of our supervision, not left to memory. On a mixed-use contract — an office with a kitchen and washrooms, for example — that means:

What to check if you manage a site

If you are responsible for a commercial or communal site, colour coding is one of the easiest things to verify without needing any cleaning expertise yourself. Worth asking your provider:

Want this standard applied to your site?

CHAS-accredited cleaning with a documented colour-coding system on every contract.
